Using Food to Heal

Food does two things, it harms or heals and what we eat has the greatest impact on our health

Following stoma surgery, plant based, low FODMAP foods are recommended for two weeks max, to reduce movement discomfort

To avoid nutrition deficiencies a wholefood plant based diet (WFPB) should be resumed after two weeks

What is Low FODMAP?

FODMAPs are foods that generate gas and draw water into the intestines to aid movement and avoid constipation

Following GI surgery, the gastrointestinal tract may be more sensitive. A plant based low FODMAP diet lessens any movement discomfort

Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides,

Monosaccharides And Polyols

Low FODMAP Foods

For an easy to use low FODMAP list of foods download the Low FODMAP A to Z Food List for IBS Sufferers by clicking the image below

Ideally select the green plant based wholefoods from the traffic light system and use the the quantities listed for low FODMAP food options

*Do not use low FODMAP for more than two weeks because, like all other diets, it restricts essential fibre and nutrition

What is a WFPB Diet?

A wholefood plant based diet focuses mostly on whole plant foods. It eliminates all animal products and highly refined factory foods as far as possible

Two weeks after GI surgery, WFPB is recommended. This ensures the fastest healing pathway, zero additional inflammation through diet and, it avoids constipation, heartburn and other symptoms that may lead to stoma surgery and other health complications

With WFPB nutrition, sufficient sleep, dayllight and exercise combined you can be sure to live your best life with your medical device

*A B12 supplement is an essential requirement for everyone

Nutrition in Hospital

Wholefood plant based nutrition in UK hospitals is unfortunately lacking. If your surgery is an emergency life-saving procedure, you won't have had time to plan. The Vegan Hospital Food Network may be able to help and can be contacted at the following link URL: https://www.facebook.com/groups/141595326426123

If your surgery isn't lifesaving, hopefully it can be avoided in the first place with a WFPB lifestyle. Approximately 95% disease and disability is lifestyle related

When your food orders are collected on the ward, ask for low FODMAP fresh fruit, freshly cooked plain vegetables, plain potatoes and salad with vinegar. Use the App above for other ideas of low FODMAP plant based wholefoods

Ask a friend or relative to bring you some low FODMAP fresh fruit, nuts and seeds so you have something to snack on

Water is the healthiest drink. Drink plenty of water; at least 6-8 cups per day, not including tea/coffee

Both tea and coffee are healthier without milk and sugar

Black tea is healthier than coffee

*Medication

If you're taking any prescribed medication, be sure to tell your Prescriber about any changes in dietary choices

Wholefood plant based nutrition is very powerful and any prescription medication may need to be adjusted accordingly
